What are in-game tokens and how are they used?

In-game tokens are digital currencies used within a video game or GameFi (Game + DeFi) ecosystem

In Web3 and blockchain-based games, these tokens are typically issued on a blockchain (like Ethereum, Polygon, BNB Chain) and have real-world value, unlike traditional in-game currencies.

🪙 Types of In-Game Tokens:

1. Utility Tokens

  1. Used for in-game transactions (buying items, upgrades, etc.).
  2. Often earned through gameplay (e.g., completing missions, winning battles).
  3. Example: $SLP in Axie Infinity.

2. Governance Tokens

  1. Give holders voting rights over game development or ecosystem decisions.
  2. Can sometimes be staked or used for passive income.
  3. Example: $AXS in Axie Infinity, $GMT in STEPN.

3. Dual-Token Models

  1. Many GameFi projects use a two-token economy:
  2. One for utility (inflationary, used often).
  3. One for governance or staking (scarce and valuable).

💡 Real GameFi Examples:

Axie Infinity:

  1. $SLP (Smooth Love Potion): Utility token, used for breeding Axies.
  2. $AXS: Governance + staking token.

Gods Unchained:

  1. $GODS token used for card crafting and governance.

The Sandbox:

  1. $SAND token used for land purchases, staking, and creating experiences.

⚠️ Things to Note:

  1. Volatility: Prices of in-game tokens can rise or fall like crypto.
  2. Earning potential: Some players earn real income from gameplay (Play-to-Earn).
  3. Regulation: Some tokens may be considered securities in certain countries.
  4. Token inflation: Over-minting can reduce value unless managed carefully.
